Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA) was established in October 1952 and is one of the first aviation higher education institutions founded by New China. In 1978, it was designated by the State Council as a national key university. In 1981, it became one of the first universities in the country to be authorized to grant doctoral degrees. In 1996, the university was included in the national '211 Project' for higher education development. In 2000, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to establish a graduate school. In 2011, it became a key construction university of the '985 Project's Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform'. In 2017, it entered the national 'Double First Class' initiative, with its disciplines of Aeronautical and Astronautical Science and Technology, Mechanics, and Control Science and Engineering selected for the second round of 'First-Class Disciplines' construction. The university is currently affiliated with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. In December 2012 and April 2021, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Civil Aviation Administration of China signed agreements to jointly develop Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. In 2018 and 2023, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Education, and Jiangsu Province signed agreements to jointly develop Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
